Vale, Professor the Honourable Dame Marie Bashir, AD, CVO On behalf of the Fearless Outreach community, we pay tribute to our long-standing Patron, Dame Marie Bashir. In addition to her lifelong dedication to the medical profession and her distinguished service as Governor of New South Wales, Dame Marie was the founding patron of PTSD Australia New Zealand. For twelve years, she served our Fearless community with unwavering commitment, and we deeply mourn her passing. Her contributions to Australian society and the advancement of mental health leadership have been truly remarkable. We extend our profound gratitude for all that she accomplished and for the legacy she has left behind.

Recovery from PTSD is not a one-time event, but a journey that requires ongoing support, patience, and sustainable strategies. Quick fixes may bring temporary relief, but long-term resilience comes from practices and resources that support healing over time. Why Sustainability Matters in PTSD Recovery Symptoms of PTSD can shift throughout life. Stressful events, anniversaries, or changes in routine may bring challenges back to the surface. Sustainable recovery strategies help create a strong foundation that supports wellbeing through both stable and difficult periods. Key Strategies for Long-Term Recovery Routine and structure: Establishing daily rhythms such as regular sleep, balanced meals, and gentle exercise can provide a sense of safety and predictability. Professional support: Counselling remains important, particularly trauma-focused approaches like EMDR or CBT. Digital options such as telehealth can also increase access. Peer and community support: Sharing experiences in safe spaces, whether in-person groups or online communities, can reduce isolation and increase hope. Creative expression: Writing, art, or music provide non-verbal outlets for processing trauma. Check out our blog on Creative Arts Therapy for more insights. Self-care habits: Regular exercise, healthy eating, and mindfulness practices create small but powerful shifts in wellbeing. Resilience in Everyday Life Recovery doesn’t mean that symptoms disappear overnight. It means finding ways to live well alongside challenges, with strategies that bring calm, strength, and balance. Even small steps like connecting with a friend, journalling, or practising breathing exercises can build resilience over time. Support Is Always Available Sustainable recovery is possible with the right mix of tools and support. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or continuing it after years of progress, remember you are not alone. For more information and practical resources, visit our Getting Help page. Together, we can build communities of resilience and hope across Australia and New Zealand.

The holiday season is often considered a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, for many, it can also bring a significant amount of stress and anxiety. FearLess, a charity dedicated to supporting those affected by post-traumatic stress (PTSD) and their families, understands the importance of self-care, especially during this time of year. In this blog, we’ll share some valuable insights and tips to help you stress-proof your festive season. 1. Prioritise Self-Care Remember, self-care isn’t selfish. It’s essential for your well-being. Make time for relaxation, exercise, and activities that bring you joy. 2. Set Realistic Expectations Don’t strive for perfection. Set achievable goals and focus on making meaningful memories rather than stressing over every detail. 3. Connect with Loved Ones Reach out to friends and family members for support and companionship. Share your thoughts and feelings with trusted individuals. 4. Create Boundaries Learn to say no when necessary. Protect your time and energy by setting clear boundaries with commitments and social gatherings. 5. Plan and Organise Make lists and plans to stay organised. This can help reduce last-minute stress and allow you to enjoy the season more fully. 6. Mindful Moments Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine. Deep breathing, meditation, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the present can help alleviate stress. 7. Seek Professional Help If you or a loved one is struggling with PTSD or heightened stress during the holidays, consider seeking professional help. FearLess provides resources and support for individuals and families affected by PTSD. At FearLess, we understand the challenges that individuals and families face during the holiday season. Our mission is to support and provide resources for those affected by PTSD. By implementing these strategies and seeking support when needed, you can stress-proof your festive season and make it a time of healing, connection, and hope. Join us in our mission to help Australian and New Zealand families living with PTSD. Your support can make a significant difference. Together, we can work towards a brighter and more peaceful future.
