Alex recently completed a 30 year career in the federal public sector, working in agencies such as the Australian Federal Police, the Department of Workplace Relations and the Department of Defence. Alex was selected for the Senior Executive Service in early 2012.
During his career Alex specialised in a wide variety of areas, including media relations, workplace relations reform and advocacy, training and development, organisational governance and transformation, national security policy, Defence Personnel policy and military logistics.
Between June 2009 and November 2011, Alex worked as a senior adviser and Chief of Staff in the Rudd/Gillard governments, responsible for issues such as the remediation of the Home Insulation Program. Alex obtained a commission in the Australian Army Reserve in 1991 and remains a passionate advocate for veterans’ issues and preserving Australia’s military history. He continues to act as a mentor for many aspiring public servants.
Alex holds Master’s degrees in National Security Administration from the National Defense College of the Philippines and Arts (Strategic Studies) from Deakin University, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Military History. He is also a graduate of the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies at the Australian Defence College. Alex suffered post-traumatic stress as a result of his posting to the Philippines in 2000-01 and is currently writing about his experiences and how they impacted on his personal and working lives.
